Black History Month with Honoring the Past and Inspiring the Future

Published on behalf of the CXPA Diversity Advancement Committee

With Black History Month coming to an end, the latest incidences of violence against Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities are a sobering reminder of why it is important to stay educated about the systemic challenges that black Americans have experienced and remain vigilant in our quest to eradicate this behavior. The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), founded by Dr. Carter Woodson in 1915, has set the theme for this year’s Black History Month Virtual Festival as “Black Resistance”

From their website:

“African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms, and police killings since our arrival upon these shores. These efforts have been to advocate for a dignified self-determined life in a just democratic society in the United States and beyond the United States political jurisdiction”.

Black History Month is a time where the key roles, contributions, and sacrifices of African Americans throughout U.S. history are recognized. We celebrate diversity through the telling of the stories of black men and women who changed life for the better by taking risks to accomplish amazing things that unite us all. Now, more than ever, it feels especially important that we celebrate black history and the achievements of the community. It is through these stories and reflections that we can honor the past and inspire the future.
