This public holiday commemorates the signing of the Panglong Agreement, which was signed on February 12, 1947 between General Bogyoke Aung San, the leader of Burma, and various Burmese tribes, promoting equality and unity among the Burmese people. The following year, on January 4, 1948, Burma achieved independence from Britain and became the country of Myanmar.
