Hong Kong: SAR Establishment Day

Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom handed sovereignty over Hong Kong back to the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on July 1, 1997. The day is customarily celebrated by an officially organized extravagant fireworks display and is also the platform for political rallies demanding universal suffrage.
