This is a national day of remembrance for the 176,000 people who perished in the 1948 earthquake in Ashgabat. The ten-second earthquake devastated the entire city. In memory of those who perished, a minute of silence is observed and wreaths and bouquets of flowers are laid on the earthquake memorial in the center of Ashgabat.
